Establishments one knew from childhood can present themselves as Zones in the not-too-distant future. Fairfield Halls, Croydon’s longstanding and established concert venue, had nothing wrong with it. But the high-felatin high-budget town planners had other ideas, and would you look at the state of it. A great playground with important local heritage for sure, but an unnecessary project by the construction sector to say the least. Gentrification may have joyously not seeped into brutalist Croydon for decades after the rest of South London, but this was a definitive sign of the times.
